Inside is a nicely drawn Tygra, a scantily-clad jungle girl with a sci-fi twist this issue by Art Saaf; Catman artist Charles Quinlan in the pirate Sea Eagle, “Return of the Hook”; a superbly drawn Lance Lewis, sci-fi/space hero by Raphael Astarita; a teen strip Jefferson Jones by the talented unknown Mike Suchorsky and a humor strip. All-in-all, a very well drawn, top-tier issue! Schomberg’s airbrush covers make this short run of covers highly collectible. Also: a Tygra text story with more Saaf art; Junior Judo by Mad Magazine’s very own Dave Berg; Pretty Boy, a “true crime” story with good-girl art by Ralph Mayo; Zippie, a teen-age humor strip, by Al Hartley and more… Schomberg often signed these beautiful airbrush covers “Xela.” He of course is even better known for his dozens of amazing covers for Timely, on Marvel Mystery, The Human Torch, Sub-Mariner and in fact, most of Timely’s early Golden Age titles. This facsimile comic book is reprinted to match the quality when first produced in 1948, reprinting Pine Comics’ Startling Comics complete with all ads and every page. Here’s the Tygra story synopsis: an evil character Vuldoom travels from planet to planet gathering specimens for his home, Deneb. After he captures Tygra and Terry, some fellow captives from Alpha Centauri team up with them to escape, in “The Stone Man from Space.” And don’t miss the ads for building your own radio; Ernest Haycox western paperbacks from Popular Library; and going fishing at night, in a comic strip, with the help of a flashlight and EverReady batteries!
